Civil War Project

The Civil War was a new kind of war.  The Industrial Revolution had brought about many changes and new technologies.  At the start of the Civil War, the telegraph made it possible for people to learn about events much more quickly than in past wars.  Journalists were sent out to follow the battles and send stories back home to families starved for information about loved ones.  A new breed of journalist emerged, the War Correspondent.

The year is 2225 and you have just finished your degree in historical war correspondence.  It is time for you to give your final report.  Each member of the class will be going back in time to research a battle of the civil war.  You will then present your findings to your classmates.  The order of presentation will be determined by the order the battles occured in the Civil War.

Part I:  Choose Your Battle

Some examples of important battles include:  - First person to ask for a battle will get it.  Be sure to have a backup plan.  You may NOT do Gettysburg.

  • Fort Sumter
  • First Manassas
  • Second Manassas
  • Antietam
  • Fredricksburg
  • Chancellorsville
  • Vicksburg
  • Shiloh
  • Assault on Petersburg
  • Cedar Creek
  • Cold Harbor
  • Wilderness
  • Spotsylvania Courthouse

These are only suggestions, feel free to choose a different battle if you wish.

Part IV: Research Your Battle and Create your presentation

There is no set length to the presentation, however be sure to include the following somewhere in your presentation:

  • when and where the battle occurred,
  • what led to its occurrence,
  • battle conditions, such as the weather, geography, and any other special features.
  • who was involved (leaders/ units)
  • how many casualties,
  • types of weapons used,
  • the end result of the battle (who "won" the battle and its effect on everything around it, including civilians).
  • At least one map of the battle
  • Pictures of the battle of people involved with the battle.
